Draw like Marc Chagall

Marc Chagall liked to make his paintings based on emotions, rather than logic. He thought that art didn’t always have to make sense.



Chagall’s ideas led to an art movement called Surrealism, which wanted to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind. Kind of like artists trying to paint their dreams.

One easy way for students to try this idea out is to have them draw simple, familiar shapes, but in all different directions. Some things can be right side up and some upside down. The result is a scene that you can recognize but doesn’t make sense. Surreal!

MATERIALS

1.Make light grid lines. Draw a hill.


2.Add simple buildings and a tree.


3.Add more trees below.

4.Rotate the paper and draw a car.

5.Rotate back and draw a large sun.
6.Rotate and draw yourself on a hill.

7.Add a play yard and trees.

8.Rotate again and fill in the center .

9.Trace with a crayon, paint and sprinkle salt for texture.

How to Draw LOTS of Cupcakes

Expand on a basic how to draw a cupcake lesson by making MANY of them, adding lots of bright colors, and maybe a shadow or highlight (or both). These cupcakes were drawn on trading card size paper (2.5″ x 3.5″) and placed in a trading card sleeve. The repetition of a theme and cartoon style drawing would also make a great Pop Art lesson. If the color seems extra bright to you, it happens for two reasons. One, is that I used Sharpie markers and two, is that they are colored on fingerpaint paper. The glossy finish makes the colors just pop. The only drawback to the fingerpaint paper is that it is tricky to draw on with a pencil because you can’t erase lines very well. At all, actually. Therefore I bring it out when drawings are extra simple like these cupcakes. If fact, you might just hide the pencils for this project and have everyone start drawing with a black marker.
