How to Draw a City

Starting with a grid will help your students learn how to draw a city, especially if they get to see some fun variations on the usual buildings.


This is a great tutorial because of how customizable it can be to create the city you want. Featured below are some simple buildings that anyone can recreate. Using those methods, you can create a city block from your own neighborhood or create a whole entire new city from your own imagination. The possibilities are endless!

Yes, you could bring out rulers to help your students draw nice straight lines, but they can be cumbersome and hard to manage. The next best thing is to start with a sheet of drawing paper that has already has a light grid on it, and then a matching tutorial. Both are available in the PDF tutorial that is linked below, and both will help young artists practice their fine motor skill line drawing.


MATERIALS

  • Black Sharpie marker, fine tip
  • Stabilo Markers

DIRECTIONS

Time needed: 1 hour.

Draw a City

1.Draw the ground line. Start the left buildings.


2.Draw two more buildings.

3.Add roof top details and clock tower.


4.Draw the windows and chimney of left building.

5.Draw windows and door of next building.


6.Draw window in the next building.


7.Draw the window and door for the last building.

8.Finish with top windows and lamp post.


9.Trace with a black marker and color.

How to Draw LOTS of Cupcakes

Expand on a basic how to draw a cupcake lesson by making MANY of them, adding lots of bright colors, and maybe a shadow or highlight (or both). These cupcakes were drawn on trading card size paper (2.5″ x 3.5″) and placed in a trading card sleeve. The repetition of a theme and cartoon style drawing would also make a great Pop Art lesson. If the color seems extra bright to you, it happens for two reasons. One, is that I used Sharpie markers and two, is that they are colored on fingerpaint paper. The glossy finish makes the colors just pop. The only drawback to the fingerpaint paper is that it is tricky to draw on with a pencil because you can’t erase lines very well. At all, actually.
