How to Draw a Hanging Bat

 Students can learn how to draw a bat in their famous resting position, hanging upside down. When it is based on simple shapes, students of all ages can enjoy drawing one.

This book beautifully illustrates how bats use their radar to see at night, and tells of a young bat’s first flight all by himself. Really one of those special books that young students can relate to, and is a great match for this how to draw project.

MATERIALS

  • Hanging Bat Tutorial (see above)
  • “Nightsong” book by Ari Berk
  • Drawing paper
  • Black marker
  • Crayons

DIRECTIONS

Time needed: 1 hour.

How to Draw a Bat

1.Make guidelines. Draw a branch.


2.Draw a center line and one wing.


3.Finish with the other wing.


4.Add a curve. Add head and neck.


5.Start the outside of the ears.



6.Finish the inside of the ears.


7.Draw ear details and feet.


8.Draw eyes, nose and mouth.


9.Trace with a marker and color.

How to Draw LOTS of Cupcakes

Expand on a basic how to draw a cupcake lesson by making MANY of them, adding lots of bright colors, and maybe a shadow or highlight (or both). These cupcakes were drawn on trading card size paper (2.5″ x 3.5″) and placed in a trading card sleeve. The repetition of a theme and cartoon style drawing would also make a great Pop Art lesson. If the color seems extra bright to you, it happens for two reasons. One, is that I used Sharpie markers and two, is that they are colored on fingerpaint paper. The glossy finish makes the colors just pop. The only drawback to the fingerpaint paper is that it is tricky to draw on with a pencil because you can’t erase lines very well. At all, actually. Therefore I bring it out when drawings are extra simple like these cupcakes. If fact, you might just hide the pencils for this project and have everyone start drawing with a black marker.
