Draw the Taj Mahal

Learn how to draw the Taj Mahal with the help of some grid paper. It makes all those symmetrical straight lines so much easier to do!





The Taj Mahal is considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Located in the city of Agra, a ruler named Shah Jahan had the Taj Mahal built as a monument and tomb for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

The monument is located on the bank of the Yamuna River and is surrounded by formal gardens and reflecting ponds. White marble and gemstones cover the outside of the Taj Mahal. Some 20,000 people worked on the monument, which took 22 years to build.

Drawing the Taj Mahal, in all its symmetrical beauty, gets a whole lot easier when working over light grid lines that are already on the paper. It eliminates the need for a ruler, which is can be a struggle, especially for young artists. The PDF tutorial that you can download has a grid template page included, so all teachers have to do is print one for each student.

MATERIALS

  • Draw the Taj Mahal Tutorial (click to open)
  • Black Sharpie marker, fine tip
  • Stabilo Markers

DIRECTIONS

Time needed: 1 hour.

How to Draw the Taj Mahal

1.Draw bottom steps and center rectangle.


2.Add a slightly larger box around the rectangle.


3.Draw the symmetrical side panels.

4.Add the “onion dome” on top.

5.Add spires and two smaller tops.

6.Draw all the window and door arches.

7.Draw the left tower.


8.Draw a matching right tower.


9.Trace with marker and color the sky. Add shadows if you wish.

How to Draw LOTS of Cupcakes

Expand on a basic how to draw a cupcake lesson by making MANY of them, adding lots of bright colors, and maybe a shadow or highlight (or both). These cupcakes were drawn on trading card size paper (2.5″ x 3.5″) and placed in a trading card sleeve. The repetition of a theme and cartoon style drawing would also make a great Pop Art lesson. If the color seems extra bright to you, it happens for two reasons. One, is that I used Sharpie markers and two, is that they are colored on fingerpaint paper. The glossy finish makes the colors just pop. The only drawback to the fingerpaint paper is that it is tricky to draw on with a pencil because you can’t erase lines very well. At all, actually.
