How to Draw a Cartoon Bird

Learn how to draw a Cartoon Bird with this easy step by step tutorial. Those big simple shapes are so fun to color!


Once of the great things about drawing cartoons is that they can introduce young artists into the idea of one shape being in front of another.

This super silly and simple bird is slightly turned, so his one wing is showing more than the other, and overlaps his body and tail. That doesn’t always happen when you draw things straight on. It’s one of the first lessons to learn how to add dimension to art, so being able to see that, and erase extra lines accordingly.

MATERIALS

  • Drawing paper
  • Black marker
  • Crayons

DIRECTIONS

Time needed: 30 minutes.

How to Draw a Cartoon Bird

1.Draw two eyes.


2.Draw body around eyes.

3.Add eye circles and neck line.


4.Add wings.

5.Erase line inside wing. Add tail.


6.Draw two feet.


7.Add beak. Erase inside.


8.Add grass lines.

9.Trace with marker and color.

How to Draw LOTS of Cupcakes

Expand on a basic how to draw a cupcake lesson by making MANY of them, adding lots of bright colors, and maybe a shadow or highlight (or both). These cupcakes were drawn on trading card size paper (2.5″ x 3.5″) and placed in a trading card sleeve. The repetition of a theme and cartoon style drawing would also make a great Pop Art lesson. If the color seems extra bright to you, it happens for two reasons. One, is that I used Sharpie markers and two, is that they are colored on fingerpaint paper. The glossy finish makes the colors just pop. The only drawback to the fingerpaint paper is that it is tricky to draw on with a pencil because you can’t erase lines very well. At all, actually.
