How to Draw a Cartoon Face

Cartoon faces are sometimes a fun alternative to drawing realistic ones, mostly because they are so simple and easy to do. Heads can become one stretched out shape, and eyes just simple circles. It’s surprising how much personality can be portrayed with just a few well placed lines.

Or at least that’s what a good cartoon artist can make you think.

MATERIALS

  • Draw a Cartoon Face (click to download a PDF)
  • Drawing paper
  • Black marker, permanent
  • Crayons

DIRECTIONS

Time needed: 45 minutes.

How to Draw a Cartoon Face

1.Draw a nose and two small eyes.

2.Start the hair line above.


3.Draw the sides of the head.

4.Add a long chin below.


5.Draw a smiling mouth.


6.Add ears on the side.

7.Add ears on the side.

8.Draw the rest of the shirt.

9.Trace with a marker and color.

How to Draw LOTS of Cupcakes

Expand on a basic how to draw a cupcake lesson by making MANY of them, adding lots of bright colors, and maybe a shadow or highlight (or both). These cupcakes were drawn on trading card size paper (2.5″ x 3.5″) and placed in a trading card sleeve. The repetition of a theme and cartoon style drawing would also make a great Pop Art lesson. If the color seems extra bright to you, it happens for two reasons. One, is that I used Sharpie markers and two, is that they are colored on fingerpaint paper. The glossy finish makes the colors just pop. The only drawback to the fingerpaint paper is that it is tricky to draw on with a pencil because you can’t erase lines very well. At all, actually. Therefore I bring it out when drawings are extra simple like these cupcakes. If fact, you might just hide the pencils for this project and have everyone start drawing with a black marker.
