How to Draw Easy 3D Buildings

Learn how to draw easy 3D buildings, by turning flat shapes into tall forms. It’s one of the first steps to learning about perspective.



Years ago, in the California school system, second graders used to learn about cityscapes. I believe it was connected to animal life, and how some adapted to live in a more urban setting.

Seeing how helpful it was to overlap my art curriculum with their studies, I developed this simple drawing project to show them how to draw city buildings that looked dimensional instead of flat.

After years of practice, I can advise that in this age range, some will catch on right away about how to make all the diagonal lines go in the same direction. Others will have variations of that, but more importantly, ALL will mostly likely feel like they just drew something that looks a lot more real than before. And that’s why 3D City Buildings used to be one of my favorites.

MATERIALS

  • How to Draw Easy 3D Buildings (click to download a PDF)
  • Drawing paper
  • Black marker
  • Crayons

DIRECTIONS

Time needed: 30 minutes.

How to Draw Easy 3D Buildings

1.Draw a ground line.


2.Add touching rectangles above.


3.Draw 45 degree angle lines at corners shown.

4.Connect ends with straight lines.

5.Start adding doors and windows.

6.Continue adding doors and windows.

7.Finish the doors and windows.

8.Add a tree, cloud and sun.

9.Trace with marker and color.

How to Draw LOTS of Cupcakes

Expand on a basic how to draw a cupcake lesson by making MANY of them, adding lots of bright colors, and maybe a shadow or highlight (or both). These cupcakes were drawn on trading card size paper (2.5″ x 3.5″) and placed in a trading card sleeve. The repetition of a theme and cartoon style drawing would also make a great Pop Art lesson. If the color seems extra bright to you, it happens for two reasons. One, is that I used Sharpie markers and two, is that they are colored on fingerpaint paper. The glossy finish makes the colors just pop. The only drawback to the fingerpaint paper is that it is tricky to draw on with a pencil because you can’t erase lines very well. At all, actually.
