How to Draw a Hummingbird

Here’s how to draw a hummingbird with an easy step by step tutorial. Their compact size and colorful bodies make for an extra adorable drawing.


How much do you know about hummingbirds? Here are a few facts that might surprise you about this amazing little bird.

  • Hummingbirds are the smallest migrating bird except they don’t migrate in flocks like other species. Some even travel alone for up to 500 miles at a time.
  • Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards.
  • The name, hummingbird, comes from the humming noise their wings make as they beat so fast.
  • Hummingbirds have no sense of smell. While they can’t sniff out feeders, they do have good color vision.

As for drawing a hummingbird, this one is pretty easy as the body wings and tail are all kept to pretty simple shapes. The fun comes when it’s time to color in the neck and beautiful shiny outer coat.

If you think you need extra fancy supplies to make some very bright hummingbird colors, guess again. You can always just use crayons to color (like a dark green over a light green) to add some extra visual TEXTURE, (one of the Elements of Art!). It’s subtle, but definitely there as the crayons will never totally mix like oil pastels. You can even add some red color over the pink to make the flower look extra vibrant.

DIRECTIONS

Time needed: 35 minutes.

How to Draw a Hummingbird

1.Draw an oval at a slight angle.


2.Add a long beak.

3.Erase the gray line and add two overlapping wings.

4.Erase the gray line and draw a tail.


5.Draw the eye and curved feather lines.


6.Add more feather lines on each wing.


7.Draw the feet and the section lines on the body.

8.Add a flower in the corner of the paper.

9.Trace with a marker and color.

How to Draw LOTS of Cupcakes

Expand on a basic how to draw a cupcake lesson by making MANY of them, adding lots of bright colors, and maybe a shadow or highlight (or both). These cupcakes were drawn on trading card size paper (2.5″ x 3.5″) and placed in a trading card sleeve. The repetition of a theme and cartoon style drawing would also make a great Pop Art lesson. If the color seems extra bright to you, it happens for two reasons. One, is that I used Sharpie markers and two, is that they are colored on fingerpaint paper.
