How to Draw a Leprechaun

A Leprechaun is a small supernatural being from Irish folklore. They are usually shown as little bearded men, wearing a coat and hat, who love to partake in mischief. In later times, they have been depicted as shoe-makers who have a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

The modern image of the leprechaun sitting on a toadstool, having a red beard and green hat, etc. is clearly a more modern invention, or borrowed from other strands of European folklore. The most likely explanation for this version is that green is a traditional national Irish color dating back as far as 1642.

This leprechaun tutorial is designed to keep all of his familiar parts in place, such as brimmed hat, beard and striped stockings, without getting too fussy about any one of them. That keeps the project fun to draw for all ages.

  • Drawing paper
  • Black marker
  • Crayons

DIRECTIONS

Time needed: 1 hour.

How to Draw a Leprechaun

1.Draw the beard.


2.Add ears and a hat brim.


3.Finish the brim and top hat.


4.Add a buckle to the hat.


5.Draw a face as shown.


6.Add the shirt and shorts.

7.Draw hands, legs and shoes.


8.Finish with the details shown.


9.Trace with marker and color

How to Draw LOTS of Cupcakes

Expand on a basic how to draw a cupcake lesson by making MANY of them, adding lots of bright colors, and maybe a shadow or highlight (or both). These cupcakes were drawn on trading card size paper (2.5″ x 3.5″) and placed in a trading card sleeve. The repetition of a theme and cartoon style drawing would also make a great Pop Art lesson. If the color seems extra bright to you, it happens for two reasons. One, is that I used Sharpie markers and two, is that they are colored on fingerpaint paper. The glossy finish makes the colors just pop. The only drawback to the fingerpaint paper is that it is tricky to draw on with a pencil because you can’t erase lines very well. At all, actually.
